THE LEADERSHIP IN EQUITY PROJECT

Featuring MGH President, Peter Slavin, MD

For over a decade, the Disparities Solutions Center has had the honor and privilege of advancing (both locally and nationally) policy and practice to improve quality, address disparities, and achieve equity, value, and high performance in health care. We are fortunate to have strong partners in the city of Boston and across the nation and have been recognized for our efforts, culminating in Massachusetts General Hospital receiving the nation’s first American Hospital Association’s Equity of Care Award in 2014.

As we view the landscape and consider the future of this work, one critical success factor stands out among health care organizations who have committed to creating higher quality, more equitable delivery systems, and that is leadership. There is no doubt that health care systems that have made progress in this arena have leaders who have come to understand the connection between quality, cost, safety, value, and health care disparities. In some cases, a personal story or experience has shaped the leader’s vision around this issue, and these are often powerful, inspirational, and influential.

As part of the Aspen Institute Health Innovators Fellowship, Joseph Betancourt, MD, MPH sought to capture inspiring personal stories from health care leaders who have engaged in work to improve quality, address disparities, and achieve equity in healthcare. Funding for this project was provided by Dorothy Terrell, an Honorary Board Member of MGH, and Mr. Robert Atchinson. The video was produced by Windy Films.
